Automotive Threads models

Automotive upholstery thread works in conditions everyday clothing never meets. A seat seam endures thousands of entries and exits, friction from clothing, temperature swings and direct sunlight through the glass. That makes automotive thread a technical product: strong, colourfast and predictable on industrial sewing machines. Metex supplies automotive upholstery thread to manufacturers of upholstery and interior components in Bulgaria and abroad.

Where it is used

  • seats and backrests – construction and decorative seams;
  • steering wheels, gear knobs and gaiters;
  • armrests, dashboards, door panels and interior trim;
  • upholstery for motorcycles, boats, caravans and other vehicles;
  • furniture upholstery and products under similar loads.

Types of upholstery thread

Bonded polyester thread

Filament polyester with a bonding coat that holds the filaments together. The coating reduces friction during sewing, prevents fraying and makes the seam more abrasion resistant. Polyester offers good light resistance and colour stability, which matters on interiors exposed to the sun.

Bonded nylon thread

Polyamide has very high strength and elasticity and copes well with dynamic loads. It is used for seams that flex and stretch heavily.

Heavy decorative thread

Visible twin-needle and decorative seams on seats and steering wheels use a heavier thread, often in a contrasting colour. These seams are part of the interior design and must look even along their whole length. Available types, thicknesses and colours are confirmed on request.

Specific requirements are often set by the customer's specification. Send it with your inquiry so we can propose a suitable thread.

How to choose thread for car upholstery

The choice starts with the material – genuine leather, faux leather or textile – and the seam type. Construction seams need a high-strength thread in the material's tone; decorative seams need a heavier thread that defines the lines clearly. Thread thickness has to match the needle and machine: too heavy a thread for a small needle causes breaks, too fine a thread gives a weak, uneven seam.

Consistency in series production matters just as much. The thread must keep the same shade and behaviour from batch to batch so that seats and panels match. Record the thread references you use and reorder them the same way every time. For leather goods outside the vehicle, see our footwear and leather threads; for general seams, our sewing threads.

Samples and custom solutions

Metex offers fast sampling, so you can test the thread on your material and machine before production. For particular colours or interior projects we discuss custom solutions, using European-standard materials.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What thread is used for car seat upholstery?

Typically bonded polyester or bonded nylon filament thread. It has high tensile strength, resists abrasion and light, and runs evenly on industrial machines.

Which thread is used for decorative seams on seats and steering wheels?

A heavier bonded thread, often in a contrasting colour, which clearly defines the seam line and keeps an even look along its length.

Can you work to our thread specification?

Yes. Send your specification with the inquiry and we will propose a suitable thread and provide a sample for testing.
